Can I Get A Side Of Jane Philpott With My Nothing Burger Scandal Special?

Anyone ready for an incoherent rant?

Drip drip drip.

The level of toxicity on social media right now regarding Canadian politics is at a level I never would have imagined. That is saying a lot, having worked in politics through the Stephen Harper years.

We are seeing certain segments of Canadian media out for blood. There is no doubt now that Jody Wilson-Raybould was the source of the original leak in Robert Fife’s Globe and Mail story that started this whole media created scandal. Since that time we have witnessed a concerted effort to deify Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott that is beginning to border on the absurd.

This week we saw the release of the 2019 Canadian budget, followed by obvious attempts from Jane Philpott and Jody Wilson-Raybould to take the narrative back to the SNC-Lavalin story and away from the budget.

The first was an embarrassing story and attempt to portray Wilson-Raybould as some type of Ottawa power center who will only rest when she feels satisfied. The second was Jane Philpott playing the reluctant resister, and not only she was selling the story to any journalist that she could – but was in full awareness of when the story would drop, and the damage it would cause to the budget itself, and the government’s ability to sell it.

Drip drip drip.

I’ve come to the realization about the state of play leading up to the election. Whenever a positive or quasi-positive story about the liberal party, good news for Justin Trudeau, or a misstep by Andrew Scheer and the Conservative Party – a salacious story involving Jody Wilson-Raybould or Jane Philpott will be released. One that promises explosive new information, or inside information regarding a civil war within the Liberal Party. This is a attempted coup by two former cabinet ministers and their team of advisers. If not a coup, an attempt to destabilize the Liberal Party leading into the pre-writ period.

Justin Trudeau gave Jody Wilson-Raybould an unprecedented waiver to tell “her truth”, the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights gave her a four hour platform in which to tell her version of events. I cannot remember any previous Prime Minister making the types of accommodations that Justin Trudeau already has to ensure that Jody Wilson-Raybould could have her say. When she gave her testimony she was fully aware that additional witnesses would be called to possibly rebut her version of events, why she did not hand in all pertinent evidence at that time including text messages and communications is beyond me. Did she not tell her entire truth at that time? Are there additional truths to be told now? Or is this just the beginning of the he said/she said never ending cycle of recriminations meant to inflict the most damage on Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party.

Drip drip drip.

Now whenever any politico, fellow politician, or journalist dare call the motivations or long term ambitions of Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott into question they are attacked by the same journalistic palace guard that created this story in the first place.

Through this entire process, Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott have had the opportunity to speak their truth through parliamentary privilege. There were parliamentary mechanisms in place that they could have used to tell their story, but have chosen not to. Was it the lack of an adequate media platform to give them the spotlight they both obviously desire?

Drip drip drip.

All we have now is the promise of more salacious stories of PMO malfeasance and conjecture that are being teased by Jane Philpott. It is impossible to rebut accusations that have not been made yet, but Canadian journalists are doing their best to ensure that this is the narrative of the story going forward.

A full blown palace coup!

A PMO in retreat!

A caucus in revolt!

Drip drip drip.

Never mind that this is two former cabinet ministers, or that there is no evidence of a caucus revolt. Corporate political journalists have a story to sell and they have been played by Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott.

This has become a full blown circus that is derailing the important business of Canadians. The SNC-Lavalin story always has been a political story and not legal story, its outcome will be decided by the Canadian electorate and not by an opposition or journalists clamoring for a scandal, or by aggrieved former cabinet ministers with their own agenda.

Canadian media has to acknowledge that Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott are political actors in this drama, and have made certain political calculations in each leak, interview, and press release they have made or participated in. To think otherwise requires a suspension of believe or naivety not befitting a journalist.

I am aware that this is rant. I am angry and pissed off. I am looking forward to election preparation. I feel that we have a stark choice this election between going backwards as a country with Andrew Scheer or staying the course set by Justin Trudeau. The more oxygen that we give to this circus, the less focus that is being given to properly assess what each party is offering Canadians and what the consequences of the decision we make in October will be.

The fact of the matter is that sides have been chosen, many journalists are actively part of the story instead of reporting it, and regardless of what is said going forward – this story has become too toxic to have an ending that will be satisfactory to anyone involved.

  1. I could be wrong but did MS. Phillpot not say she, told, the PM not to take JWR out of Justice/AG role. Was that a threat of warning what would come if he did. Seems she might have dome explaining to do herself.
